The name Willibrord was chosen by Fr Sassen who was a Dutch priest who acquired the land in Clayton from St Brigid’s for a church in 1905. Willibrord was the first Bishop of Utrecht. The new parish was opened in 1906. Before the church was opened Mass was held in a room above the school. The Foundation Stone was laid by the Bishop of Salford. Fr Charles Hanrahan developed the parish, he was followed by Richard Mortimer who devoted most of his life to the parish of St. Willibrord. Fr Patrick Dillon supervised the building of the present church which was opened in 1938. The altar in St Willibrord’s church is the original altar which has a mosaic design on the front. Fr George Green was appointed as rector for the parish. In 1855 Fr Allen was appointed, during his time at the church the parish struggled through hard times due to the cotton famine. Between 1865 and 1929 the parish had only two parish priests Canon Liptrop and Canon O’Kelly. Canon O’Kelly had a new boy’s school built int 1896 and extended the girls school. A parish hall was built in 1908. Since 1929 St Anne’s had two future Bishops: Dr John McNulty who became Bishop of Nottingham and Dr Henry Vincent Marshall who became the Bishop of Salford. Dean Jeremiah Kelly was parish priest during the Second World War. During this time the number of people in the parish dwindled to half of what it had been twenty-five years before. The parish did not revive until the new housing schemes and regeneration began in the late 1990s. The old church was demolished and replaced by the new church in 1977-78. In 1995 that building had to be demolished to make space for a new road. The new church was built a short distance away on Grey Mare Lane. The parish is an offshoot from St Anne’s Ancoats. Fr Liptrott acquired a site in 1877 to build a school-chapel. The church became independent in 1880 when Fr William Sassen a Dutch priest became the parish priest and served for thirty-five years. The first church was opened in 1884. A second church was opened in 1901 and the church was re-consecrated. In 1971 the parish hall was opened. The church celebrated its centenary year in 17979 and in 1995 the last Mass was celebrated in the second church. In August 1995 the first Mass was celebrated in the third church building which was the newly converted church hall.
